The sun is out, the grill is on, and the pool is open… It’s summer time! And while having fun is what summer’s all about, being active is important too. In fact, children need about 60 minutes of physical activity per day to stay healthy.
3 steps to get your child moving
Don’t let your child turn into a couch potato this summer! Follow these steps to ensure plenty of physical activity:
1. Set guidelines for screen time
According to a recent study conducted by the YMCA, 50 percent of parents surveyed said that technological distractions (cell phones, television, computer) prevent their kids from engaging in healthy behaviors. Don’t let technology get in the way of physical activity!
Be sure to explain how much gadget time is too much and set a timer to limit daily usage. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one to two hours per day of combined technology use.
2. Be active with your child
Participating in physical activity with your child is not only beneficial to your health, it also encourages bonding time. Things like taking a walk or doing scavenger hunts are great ways to have fun together.
3. Give kids toys that encourage physical activity
Things like basketballs, soccer balls, or even kites are great toys that are sure to get your child excited for some outdoor fun. Get the whole family moving with games like volleyball or badmiton!
